The snow started falling here about 11am and was light with a few times when it stopped all together. The first time it stopped I was outside on the small front lawn area where the Bradford Pear has dropped its leaves and we haven’t got round to picking them all up. On a green lawn they do not look particularly notable , but when you add a little bit of snow, the effect accentuates the slightly up-tilted leaves. I have found that snow does this at other times, including the remnant daffodil hedge that was growing in Barrington Hall, Ga but was tough to see in the lawn. Adding a slight layer of snow to cover the lower grass, and the daffodil leaves stood out beautifully.

Well it was bound to happen and even in Georgia we had frosts that killed the tender growth of plants, and this one was late by Toledo standards, but yes we got a killing frost this week.

Outside is really quite pretty, and the days are pleasantly sunny but there is a forecast of snow flurries by the weekend.

The beans were the first to go and I cleared the veggie bed yesterday just leaving some kale and chard. Today I am trimming a couple of hibiscus that are stuck in the middle of the lawn, and I may move them, or leave that until spring.

Here is a video of week’s work so far:

Yes indeed, it is officially March and that means Spring! Outside is looking like spring too with daffodils in bloom everywhere, the trees are slowly putting out blossom and the forecast is …….. SNOW???????? Apparently the rain from yesterday has turned to drizzle this morning and is going to degenerate into snow by this afternoon. I am sure it will be just a bit of the damp wet sort of snow, but darn it, I am ready for spring. If the snow arrives, look for a picture this afternoon.

Until then I am watching my little seedlings. I finally sowed the first batch last Thursday, and some of them are already showing signs of germination. Mainly the lettuces and basil. I realised when I was looking at them that I do not have a purple basil. I will just have to order a bunch more seeds because just one packet, plus postage is a waste. I wonder what else I will feel compelled to order?

Yesterday on the new radio show (www.radiosandysprings.com Americas Home Grown Veggie Show ) we talked about sowing seeds, average first frost, and getting way too many seedlings – one of my failings. The show was great fun, so take a listen when it is online.

The forecast was right – we really are getting some rain. Not the wind driven storm type rain that bounces off the dry earth, but a good gentle soaking rain. So far this morning we have had about 0.5″. It has been a month or so since we last had any rain at all, and the gound was definately hard. That thin layer of dust that has accumulated will finally be washed away and over dry roots can now refresh the drooping leaves. The garden will look so much better by tomorrow when the rain has moved through.

Alas it was also ‘Walk your child to School Day’ – not an enthusiastic group doing that today!
