Okra is a popular southern vegetable and from the gardeners point of view – it is prolific. The vegetable is used in gumbo, eaten raw or fried – bacon fat being the favorite.
Last year was my first experience with growing okra and boy is it prolific! The flower turns into a pod overnight and the pod becomes over ripe in a matter of hours. The best size is apparently when it is about as thick as a thumb.
Well, I am no fan of eating this green pod, but the flower on the plant is definately a plus. Part of the mallow family, it has a creamy white petals with a dark central area where the stamen is. Very pretty!
